Time lapse of a 16′x16″ ceramic tile installation on a basement concrete floor. This 16inch ceramic tile was installed on a concrete basement floor with a medium bed polymer modified thinset mortar. A medium bed mortar will make the installation of a large format tile a little easier. First the floor was swept and cleaned, then before applying the thinset, the concrete was moistened with a damp sponge so that the concrete will not draw the moister out of the thinset to quickly. First the mortar is applied with the flat side of the trowel to key it in, and then the notched side is used to gauge the thinset to the correct depth. In this case I used a ½” square notched trowel. Before the tile is set into the mortar, it is back buttered with the flat side of the trowel to fill the pattern on the back of the tile to ensure 100% coverage. It is important to keep the lines of the tile square and straight especially on large floors to keep the grout lines even in width. Once the thinset has set, the floor can be grouted.
