This video is to bring you a closer look at the Zero 188S-Bk. This is a piece of silicone self-adhesive gasketing. It is very typical in common objects. It is a material that could be useful in weather stripping doors. You will see this in hotels quite often, motel doors. What makes this material a bit unique is a couple of things. First of all, and not really the most exciting is the use of 3M brand adhesive. If you have ever used adhesive material by 3M, you probably have learned that in my experience, they make the finest quality of adhesives. If I am doing something like the material that you can see behind me, that sound batt, that is all 3M adhesive. Everything else I would use would come off after a month. So 3M adhesive in my experience is superior. Number 2 is the fact that the material is anti-ligature is important to know. That means that this material is specifically going to behave in such a way that will prevent someone from harming themselves with this material. That application would be in an institutional setting where someone might pull this off the frame and do harm to themselves, hanging and things of that nature. This material is specifically anti ligature rated. It is sound rated; it is air seal rated so you are going to use this material in an application where you are looking to really retard the transmission of air and sound which is crucial and obviously to behave as weather stripping. I personally would not use this on an exterior door at all. I have used it for its intended purpose installing it on hotel doors, but I’ve also used this material to augment an existing weather stripping installation on an interior door. This adhesive regardless of who makes it would not be appropriate for 10 below Chicago middle of the winter sort of application. So interior applications is where you are going to see it. There is an image below this video showing everything important dimensionally about the item. It is 1/2″ wide, it is 1/4″ and it is what they call a tear drop shape. You can use this material for its intended purpose. The two jambs and the header. Installing this material is going to be something that you are going to want to be cautious of, but before we get to that, there is a link below this video to what is called the product brochure which simply shows this item and Zero’s sister products so that you can review all of the options in a single consolidated sort of format. Now, there is another link called mounting drawing that will show you the instructions by which you go about installing this material. We will go through it now. First of all, where you locate the material is indicated in the lower left hand corner in the plan view that is there. If you are dealing with the hinge side of the door, you are going to install this on the rabbet of the frame like this. If you are dealing with the lock, jamb, or the header you will install this material on the face of the stop just as it is shown and that will allow proper operation of your door based on the closing aspect and the opening aspect of how the door works with the frame. Before the installation, lets go through it. Surface of frame to be thoroughly cleaned where the gasketing is to be applied, see the drawings that we just mentioned. Use a solvent cleaner such as mineral spirits or a common detergent cleaner can be used. Make sure to check for any impediments, dust, dirt, oil, grease, etc. Or loose paint and remove them from the surface area. If the frame has been recently painted, be sure that the paint is cured for at least a week. Be sure that the surface area is completely free of any dust. Any sort of particulate on the frame is going to cause the adhesive to fail, speaking from actual experience. Gasketing is best applied in a temperature range of 70 – 90 degree Fahrenheit which is typical room temperature at least the 70 range. . So you can link to their catalog below this video is a link the manufacturer’s page where you can pull up the product catalog and review that there. Any questions on this Zero 188S, the S stands for silicone, Bk for black. Available in several different lengths. You buy them by the length. You can buy a 3′ piece and two 7′ pieces and have a set for a door. You can also buy 100 12″ pieces and indicate in the comment field to ship this out as a 100′ continuous roll. Any questions on this or any other Zero product, please feel free to reach out to us.
Our silicone coating technology permits MTi to coat silicones onto direct-coated papers like SCK and CCK, or polycoated paper, PET, TPO, polyolefin, and non-woven substrates at high coating speeds and with extremely low extractables. We are capable of attaining extractable levels less then 1% on PP and PE films. This cure level is advanced for thermal silicone systems.
These low extractables allow our customer’s adhesives to perform their jobs without negative influences from migrating silicone. Using MTI’s highly-engineered release products, customers have achieved increases in tack levels with their standard adhesives. In some instances performance improvements of up to 33% were realized without any change to the psa chemistry.
Superior release performance
MTi’s technicians are experts at designing silicone chemistries for protecting and releasing all manner of pressure sensitive adhesives and mastic compounds at very high temperatures. This is especially important for roofing, building, and construction applications.
MTiPolyexe products are designed to meet and exceed even the most stringent specifications, maximizing operating efficiencies in your plant. Key characteristics like high temperature resistance, dimensional integrity/flatness, and caliper control, will result in measurable improvements in your manufacturing operations.
