Bought for £20.00 from a charity shop this table is given a heavy distressed look, one coat of acrylic paint for primer, then a coat of dulux oil based satinwood paint is applied with a foam roller and layed off .
wet and dry sanding blocks are used to prepare sand and distress the table and by showing the process from start to finish all the steps from prep to painting are easy to follow.
acrylic primer was used as it is a quick drying product, i applied the primer with a foam roller, the primers job is to grip the wooden surface so it is fine to just give a thin coat that does not need to cover the wood completely.
By using oil based satinwood the surface once fully dried is very tough and will withstand knocks and bumps a good alternative is to use a water based satin paint finish to paint in the colour of your choice.
The distressing technique used is slightly unusual in that i used the sanding pad wet by dipping and squeezing out any excess water this method not only prevents dust but also sands the layers in a smooth progression for a less aggressive looking worn look.
It pays to use good quality paint brushes and foam rollers when applying your paint you may want to see brush lines to create the “hand painted look” but bristles in the surface is not such a good idea, good quality tools can be washed out and re used time and time again too.
The table is of course a reproduction piece with a laminated top i was drawn to use this particular style because of its attractive thin legs and curved edging detail its very easy to pick up inexpensive furniture for repainting from charity shops secondhand furniture outlets and car boot sales and its great fun to turn a tired looking item into a real talking point.
