Here are a few tips specific to the 2016 Tacoma:
The new body 2016-2017 Tacoma is very different from the previous 2005-15 Tacoma design.
The New 2016-2017 Tacoma’s have:
Flush Bed Caps with the Tailgate
Textures on the top surface of the OEM bed caps that makes sealing more difficult
Cut outs in the front of the bed
Bulk Head Seal (1/4” or 3/4” option)
BAK has always used Bulkhead Seals to offer options to selling the front of the cover. If the covers front flap seal makes full contact with the bulkhead, you should be good. Otherwise, depending what truck you drive and whether you have a plastic drop in bed liner, you may choose the thicker 3/4 in bulkhead seal or the thinner 1/4 inch bulkhead seal to close any gaps between the covers front flap seal and the trucks bulkhead.
NOTE 1: The bulkhead seal is installed 1st, before the rails, all way across to seal up to the OEM bed caps.
NOTE 2: To improve the watertight fit you can add RTV silicone in the corners where the bulkhead seal meets the OEM bed cap and to seal the front edge of the OEM bed cap from the sheet metal. This is also effective with spray in liners and their deep texture finish.
Utility Rail Foam Blocks at the Cab
BAK provides foam blocks that fill the gap in the front corners near the cab. However, small gaps may remain.
NOTE: In order to achieve the most water tight installation, some RTV Silicone can be used to satisfy the level of sealing required. (Silicone not included)
Sealing the Rails to the OEM Bed Caps
2016-2017 Tacoma OEM Bed Cap “Pattern” run right underneath the BAK Rails and make sealing difficult. Additional Sealant in the recessed area’s dramatically improves the water tight fit.
NOTE: Many of the local dealers may have seal material they use or RTV Silicone sealant they use when called for. These techniques are not needed vary often, or they are specific to a certain truck with specific circumstances. But these simple techniques can get the results we seek to keep the bed as dry as possible.
Tailgate Gap – Seal
All Trucks have a large gap around the tailgate. That’s to allow for flex in the frame and chassis. Tailgate seals can be added to help keep out the most amount of water and dust.
Waterproof?
Truck beds have gaps and provision for drainage. The same holes left for water to find its way to the ground can also allow water to get into the truck bed. Condensation and other natural phenomena occur that get us wet from time to time as well.
